New Westminster’s Gavin Matts bested fellow Vancouver area comics Kathleen McGee and Kyle Bottom, along with five other finalists to win the 8th annual SiriusXM Top Comic title at Just For Laughs 42 in Toronto. Arguably Canada’s top comedy accolade, the title comes with a $25,000 prize, appearances at JFL Toronto, Vancouver’s JFL NorthWest and the Montreal Just For Laughs 2018 events, along with a showcase spot in the televised Comedy Network JFL: All Access special recorded at the Montreal festival.
Along with fellow Vancouver comic Sophie Buddle, Gavin co-hosts Barely Legal, a monthly underground comedy show with performances by some of the city’s best up and coming local comics and drop-in sets by touring comics. It’s a wild grab bag of comedy; never knowing who will show up.
When he’s not busy putting on his own shows, Gavin Matts is an active stand-up comic locally and on the road. He can frequently be seen at The Comedy Mix or The Goldie’s Pizza Comedy Basement
His September 2017 debut stand-up album Premature released on 604 Records premiered at #1 on the iTunes comedy charts; beating out Jeff Foxworthy’s same day release for four straight days.
Still a relatively new comic, Gavin Matts dedication to the craft of comedy has earned him numerous notable performances such as the 2014 and 2016 Pemberton Music Festival, JFL NorthWest 2016 and 2017, Oddblock Comedy Festival and spots at top clubs across the country.
